A Basic Guide to Speakers Placement for Beginners
Ever wondered how the sound system should be setup for a live band?
Check this infographic out.
1. MAIN SPEAKERS
Placed each side of stage in Left-Right (Stereo) format
Cover audience area as much as possible
In front of stage, in front of microphones
To reduce amount of feedback into microphones
Horizontal coverage angle wide enough to cover front area
Throw must reach the back & achieve minimum SPL required
Flown speakers must tilt down to cover front to back
Placed directly below/under main speakers
Sound from main speakers & subwoofers arrive at audience at same time
Placed on ground to reduce sound energy losses/dispersion
Any distance between main speakers & subwoofers, needs time delay so sound arrives at the audience at same time.
3. STAGE MONITORS
One monitor for each performer
To hear his own sound/voice/instrument
Typically wedge type speakers placed on floor
4. FRONT FILL
Main speakers not wide enough to cover front area
Front fill speakers needed to cover “gaps”
Typically placed at ear level directly in front of stage
Typically smaller lower power speakers
Wide horizontal coverage is preferred to cover front rows
5. FRONT OF HOUSE
Placed in middle of the audience area
For sound engineer to hear same sound as audience
Able to create a good mix & control sound system well
